When to use “A”

We use “A” with common nouns that are singular and begin with consonant sounds.

Example: a girl, a mango

Here the word girl starts with “g” which is a consonant. So you have to write “a girl”.

When to use “An”

We use “An” with common nouns that are singular and begin with vowel sounds. Remember the vowels are a,e,i,o,u.

Example: an apple, an orange

Here apple starts with the vowel “a”. So you have to write “an apple”.

When to use “The”

We use “The” with proper nouns that are only one of a kind.

Example: The pacific ocean, The sun
